01
Where to add or relocate sockets
Consider furniture, appliances and how the room is used before choosing positions. A useful outlet should remain accessible rather than being hidden behind fixed furniture. Include any planned layout changes so the finished installation serves the space without relying on a series of temporary extensions.
02
Choose socket types and positions
Explain whether you want new outlets, relocated ones or a change to an existing fitting. Indoor, outdoor and bathroom locations have different suitability considerations. The electrician can assess the appropriate fitting and position; a preferred appearance should be considered alongside electrical and environmental requirements.
03
Check the existing socket circuit
More socket outlets do not automatically provide more capacity. The existing circuit and expected equipment need assessment before additions are agreed. In some projects, a new circuit may be appropriate; in others, an alteration to a suitable existing arrangement may meet the requirement.
04
Socket cable routes and wall finishes
Routes can be concealed or surface-mounted depending on the property and agreed finish. New positions may involve lifting floors, opening walls or working around fitted units. Discuss the visual result and who reinstates affected surfaces, particularly if the room is already decorated.
05
Request socket installation quotes
Provide a room sketch or list of positions, the intended equipment and the number of outlets. Note any existing socket faults separately so repairs are not confused with additions. Ask the quote to identify fittings, routing, testing and finishing responsibilities.
Electrical service questions
Questions about sockets
Can a single socket become a double?
It may be possible, subject to the existing box, wiring and installation assessment. Replacing the fitting does not by itself increase the circuit’s available capacity.
Can sockets be added outside?
Yes, where a suitable installation can be designed. Location, weather exposure, protection and the supply route need assessment before the fitting is selected.
Will adding sockets require wall repairs?
It depends on the route and finish agreed. Clarify any chasing, patching and decoration in the quote so the cost of the completed room is understood.
