01
When to consider surge protection
You may be considering surge protection while changing a consumer unit or reviewing the electrical supply to valuable equipment. Explain the equipment and project context. If the actual issue is repeated tripping, power loss or overheating, investigate that fault rather than assuming a surge device will resolve it.
02
What surge protection addresses
Transient surges are brief overvoltage events. Protection for these events has a different purpose from devices responding to overloads or other electrical faults. It does not offer a guarantee against every form of equipment damage or replace the need for a sound installation.
Guidance: IET: surge protection
03
Choose protection for your installation
The electrician needs to assess the existing distribution equipment, earthing and appropriate coordination of protective measures. A plug-in product and protection at the installation level are not simply interchangeable. Ask what the proposed arrangement addresses and how it fits the equipment already present.
04
Surge protection installation and limitations
Clarify the installation scope, any changes needed to the consumer unit and what information will be provided afterwards. Ask how the selected equipment indicates its condition and what maintenance or replacement guidance applies. Those details depend on the specified system, not a generic lifespan claim.
05
Request surge protection quotes
Provide existing installation details and explain whether surge protection is part of a larger upgrade. Ask the quote to identify equipment, associated work and testing. Where a particular incident prompted the enquiry, describe what happened without assuming its cause was a surge.
Electrical service questions
Questions about surge protection
Is a plug-in protector the same as installation-level protection?
No. They occupy different positions and can have different roles. The appropriate arrangement requires assessment of the installation and any coordination between devices.
Will surge protection stop a circuit tripping?
It is not a general cure for trips. Recurring disconnection needs investigation to identify the fault or operating condition causing it.
Can it be considered during a consumer unit replacement?
Yes. It can be considered within the installation assessment and specification. Ask the electrician to explain the proposal and its limits.
